In honor of Pride Month, Maxim Staffing is spotlighting Akash Abraham, who has been working at headquarters in Columbia, Maryland as a Business Process Analyst with our Recruitment Centers of Excellence.
What Pride Means to Akash
Akash is a New Yorker through and through, Akash came to Maxim and immediately connected with everyone around him. Akash described that when he started working at headquarters the first thing he noticed was the Pride Flags from 2022’s Maxim Pride Celebration. Through all the years Akash has spent in corporate jobs, he has never had a place so openly welcoming. He also added that Maxim is the first job he didn’t have to come out to.
Although Akash has been out since he was 24, he had actually known he was homosexual since he was 13. Born in Brunei and raised in Queens, NY, Akash grew up in a religious family that hindered him from coming out as soon as he knew, because he struggled to accept himself due to the influence of his upbringing.
Despite this, Akash has been openly celebrating Pride since 1999. “Pride means I can be my authentic self every single day, unapologetically. We get to show up, show out, and celebrate how far we’ve come,” Akash describes.
Although he had already been a part of Pride events before, Akash was driving down to the Millennium March in DC in April 2000 and started to get the feeling that this was a little bit more than just the party he was expecting it to be. To see people, of so many ages from all across the country, coming together to celebrate who they are and to stand for equality and LGBTQ+ rights was very impactful and an important way to put this movement into perspective – LGBTQ+ rights are human rights.
