Meet Fatima Ameen, our team member spotlight for Diversity Month

Fatima is a Senior Graphic Designer and just celebrated her 10 year anniversary with Maxim

You recently celebrated 10 years at Maxim—congrats! How did you come to join Maxim?
After working almost 8 years at an agency, I decided to make the switch to work as an In-house Graphic Designer. Having worked with many national organizations within healthcare, joining Maxim was ideal based on my experience and desire to continue working within healthcare.

Can you talk about your career with the company?
I’ve had the opportunity to be involved in a variety of Marketing strategies as well as Maxim’s rebrand in 2016. In 2017, I collaborated with the Real Estate team in environmental rebranding efforts at HQ and offices designing image and word murals for lobby and conference room walls and office breakrooms. Additionally, I’ve designed Marketing collateral, tradeshow banners and Maxim’s occasion cards and collaborated with other teams at HQ to design templates for their newsletters. Most recently, I designed the logo for Sunburst Workforce Advisors.

What advice can you give team members to help them be successful in their roles and at Maxim?
Be adaptable. Business strategies and teams can both change. New strategies and innovations can pose challenges but are also exciting opportunities that help build acumen and grow experiences. Adding team members or changing roles within a team can alter workflows but also provide opportunities to build new processes to address the team’s and company’s needs.

How do you unwind after a long day at work?
I enjoy reading fiction and books for a book club I’m a member of. I’ll also watch a couple of shows on Peacock and Netflix.

Why is diversity & inclusion so important to your work? How do you strive to make an impact in your design approach for the Maxim brand?
Design has to speak to a diverse population. I strive for D&I in my designs and for Maxim’s brand through imagery and presenting visual information using colors and typography that will be well-received by all.

April 2nd marks the beginning of Ramadan. Can you share what this holy month of fasting means to you? How can the workplace best support those who observe Ramadan?
Ramadan is a month to recharge my spirituality. I try to focus on prayer and reading the Quran while also enjoying the communality of breaking fast with friends and family. This year, the fasts will be approximately 14 hours long so Muslims may start to feel fatigue towards the latter half of the day. Having the opportunity to take breaks throughout the day to rest or meditate – in the Wellness rooms or an empty conference room – might be beneficial as well as having flexibility in start and finish times (since they won’t be taking lunch).

April is Celebrate Diversity Month

Although we should celebrate diversity year-round, April is Celebrate Diversity Month, a celebration that was formally initiated in 2004 to recognize our unique backgrounds, cultures and traditions. By celebrating differences and similarities during this month, it is the hope that people will gain a deeper understanding of each other.

There are a lot of ways to celebrate diversity at home and in the workplace.  We can carry on the practice of encouraging the acknowledgement of our differences by engaging with aspects of other cultures, perspectives, and lifestyles in significant ways. Below are a few things that you can do to honor diversity month and please remember to not limit your acknowledgement to just one month! These things can be done year-round; by yourself, either with a family member, or even virtually with friends:

  • Talk with someone from a different culture about the values and practices that they recognize
  • Read a book, watch a movie, or catch a documentary series that looks at different cultures, lifestyles, or topics from a multicultural lens
  • Listen to a different type of music and learn a dance that goes along with it
  • Try a food or new recipe that is native to a different culture
  • Try to learn a new language via a free App or YouTube ( )

Happy Diversity Month!
