In honor of Celebrate Diversity Month, we spoke with Fatima Ameen, a Senior Graphic Designer, who just celebrated her tenth anniversary at Maxim. Q & A with Fatima

You recently celebrated ten years at Maxim. Congrats! How did you come to join Maxim?

After working almost eight years at an agency, I decided to make the switch to work as an in-house Graphic Designer. Having worked with many national organizations within healthcare, joining Maxim was ideal based on my experience and desire to continue working in the healthcare industry.

Can you talk about your career with the company?

I’ve had the opportunity to be involved in a variety of marketing strategies as well as Maxim’s rebrand in 2016. In 2017, I collaborated with the real estate team in the environmental rebranding efforts at HQ, including designing image and word murals for the lobby, conference rooms and office breakrooms. Additionally, I’ve designed marketing collateral, trade show banners and Maxim’s occasion cards. I’ve also collaborated with other teams at HQ to design templates for their newsletters. Most recently, I designed the logo for Sunburst Workforce Advisors.

What advice can you give team members to help them be successful at Maxim?

I would say to be adaptable. Business strategies and teams can both change. New strategies and innovations can pose challenges but are also exciting opportunities that help build acumen and grow experiences. Adding team members or changing roles within a team can alter workflows but also provide chances to build new processes to address the team’s and company’s needs.

Why are diversity and inclusion so important to our work? How do you make an impact in your design approach for the Maxim brand?

Design has to speak to a diverse population. I strive for diversity and inclusion in my designs and Maxim’s brand through imagery and presenting visual information using colors and typography that will be well received by all.

April 2nd marks the beginning of Ramadan. What does this holy month mean to you? How can the workplace support those who observe Ramadan?

Ramadan is a month to recharge my spirituality. I try to focus on prayer and reading the Quran while also enjoying the commonality of breaking fast with friends and family. This year, the fasts will be approximately 14 hours long, so Muslims may start to feel fatigued towards the latter half of the day. Having the opportunity to take breaks throughout the day to rest or meditate in the wellness rooms or an empty conference room might be beneficial. Also, having flexibility in start and finish times would help because they won’t be eating lunch.

How do you unwind after a long day at work?

I enjoy reading fiction and books for my book club. I’ll also watch a couple of shows on Peacock and Netflix.

Enjoy Celebrate Diversity Month

Although we strive for diversity and inclusion all year, April is Celebrate Diversity Month, a celebration that was formally initiated in 2004 to recognize our unique backgrounds, cultures and traditions. By embracing our differences and similarities during this month, it is the goal of Celebrate Diversity Month that people will gain a deeper understanding of each other.

There are many ways to honor Celebrate Diversity Month, including:

  • Talk with someone from a different culture about their values and customs
  • Read a book or watch a movie that deals with different cultures, lifestyles or topics
  • Listen to music from another culture or country
  • Sample another culture’s food
