In August, we are spotlighting Melissa Bilo who works in our corporate office in Columbia, Maryland as a Billing and Collections Trainer. The D&I team spoke with Melissa to learn about what brought her to Maxim Healthcare Staffing, the various roles she has worked in, and what she has accomplished during her time with the company.
Reflecting on Melissa’s Journey with Maxim Healthcare Staffing
I joined Maxim in 2019 by referral. I knew a few people that worked for Maxim, and I was interested in what Maxim had to offer, so I took the leap. During my time as a Reimbursement Specialist, I was often given branch offices that had very specific billing requirements, large amounts of holds, and large AR, which allowed me to learn some of the more complex parts of the job. When the billing team changed systems in 2020 (yes, a pandemic AND a new billing system at the same time!) I was one of the first to go into the new system and quickly became a subject matter expert in it! Because of that, I was able to assist the rest of the department as they rolled into the new system, and eventually, a training role was created for me in 2022.
In my new role as the Billing and Collections Trainer, I assist with training the department’s new hires so that they have the foundation they need to be a strong biller. I collaborate with teams on process improvements, assist with audits, lead open sessions for the billers to ask questions, and any other projects the billing team assigns to me.
I want to say I am most proud of the success I had with my last branch office. I was able to get my over 60 down to 5% with $4.5 million in AR. In my new role as the department trainer, I love seeing the new hires “graduate” from the training program and go on to be amazing billers. I can’t help but feel like I had a small hand in getting them off to a good start!
